Wanganui Track Update and Licence/Venue Changes
July 08, 2022

The club met recently at NZTR and the following agreement was made for our schedule leading up until the end of the year.

This change to our schedule allows our track to fully recover while concentrating on our 2 feature meetings as priorities with the Guineas/Fillies meeting on 3 September (subject to the track review at the jumpouts scheduled for 11th August) and Christmas at the races on 26th November.

Wanganui Track Update and Licence/Venue Changes

NZTR have been working with the Wanganui JC and New Zealand Sports Turf Institute to resolve an issue with the Wanganui track at or about the 1500m mark that has necessitated the transfer of race-meetings from Wanganui over the last six weeks. While the Wanganui track is recovering following recent further work on it, the following measures have been put into place.

1.    The meeting scheduled for Wanganui on Friday 5 August will be removed from the Dates Calendar. There are two other CD Industry dates in close proximity and a race(s) can be added if required.
2.    At this stage, the Wanganui Guineas meeting will still be held at Wanganui on Saturday 3 September.  However, in order for this to happen the following conditions will need to be met to NZTR’s satisfaction:
(a)    Horses (ridden by senior riders) will need to gallop successfully over the affected area under the supervision of an RIB Steward in the first week of August.
(b)    Jumpouts involving 40 to 50 horses galloping, at pace, across the affected area will need to be held, successfully, under the supervision of the NZTR Track Adviser and an RIB Steward not less than two weeks prior to the Wanganui Guineas meeting.
3.    Assuming both of these conditions are met to NZTR’s satisfaction, we would proceed with the Guineas meeting at Wanganui on 3 September subject to weather in the period immediately leading up to the meeting. NZTR’s decision on whether a condition has been satisfied will be made by it, in its discretion, in consultation with the Club, RIB Stewards and the TAB.
4.    If, however, these conditions are not met to NZTR's satisfaction, then the Wanganui Guineas meeting on 3 September will need to be moved, most likely to Otaki. In addition, an assessment would be made at that time as to what further remedial work, if any, may be needed to make the track safe for racing.
5.    The Jumps meetings scheduled for Wanganui on 22 September and 2 October will be moved to Woodville irrespective of whether or not the Guineas meeting can be held at Wanganui.
6.    A consequential change of Woodville taking the jumps meetings is that the 29 September meeting scheduled for Woodville will now be an Otaki Maori RC meeting at Otaki.
7.    The Wanganui Cup meeting scheduled for Saturday 26 November would be held at Wanganui provided the track is safe for racing at that time.
8.    Any minor distance changes that are required will be notified in due course.
